Abstract

François Houtart died in June 2016, leaving a considerable work and a legacy for interpreters and researchers who want to bring their contribution to a more just and cohesive world. This article analyzes the fundamental principles of his work and his contributions to contemporary social sciences. After a brief review of his itinerary  and his contribution to the theology of liberation, the article focuses on the beliefs that have guided his commitment as a sociologist. Analyst and actor, he has been an important protagonist of some of the most important contemporary emancipation projects, on the front of social movements in World Social Forums or progressive governments in Latin America and Asia. One of François Houtart's major contributions to the social sciences consists in his role as precursor and promoter of the « Southern epistemologies » that invite us to analyze the world, the mechanisms of oppression and emancipation projects from the point of view of social actors and people oppressed in the South from the perspective of « another mondialisation », that of justice and life.
